![]() ![]() In comparison, Americans in general are not super brand conscious - sure, there's some pockets of it ("real housewives" comes to mind), but in China, it's like a whole different world. I recently took a trip to visit family in Beijing, after being away for many years and it was really funny seeing the contrast between China and the US. It also feels good to pay a craftsman or artist what their work is worth. I do care that it makes me look ~~expensive and is recognized by people who are also into it, but it's far from my primary motivation. I like designer for the quality, the craftsmanship, the service, and the attention to detail. Personally? I wouldn't buy fake designer. At the same time, piggying back off a comment from the other thread, if someone who looked like they could afford designer were carrying a (non-garish) fake bag, would I be able to tell? I don't think I would. Part of it is that they're buying stolen property, party of it I'm sure is classism, and part of it is this weird ick factor. I do judge people who wear fake designer. ![]() Depending on what you're wearing and how, it might make people see you as silly or out of place, too. That doesn't mean it's okay to buy them counterfeit, but I think this notion is an argument against the idea that wearing your full-price designer swag makes people see you as high-value. A lot of luxury houses overcharge for the brand, and if you're new to luxury fashion, you almost never will be able to tell when a piece is worth the price. I'm sure there's possible regulatory solution wherein people can still make fakes and the designers get a cutback.Įdit: some designer goods really aren't worth the price tag! (thanks /u/lumenphosphor). Everyone's a bad guy.Įconomically speaking, it's hard to represent the earnings from sales of counterfeit as losses for the brand, because most of those sales wouldn't have been made: people who buy fakes can't afford designer, and a lot of brands are wary of going the Michael Kors route and putting out cheap subdivisions because they've seen how it devalues the flagship. ![]() At the same time, copyright infringement is totally rampant in the fashion industry and a lot of fashion houses steal from each other, from indie artists, etc. It's not right to take somebody else's ideas and trademark that they've been developing for years without reimbursing them for it. The only requirement for you to post your opinion here is that you be able to defend it. That somebody disagrees with you is not an insult to your character! We are all educated people capable of having a civil discussion and karma is not money (sadly otherwise I'd have a downpayment), so I encourage everyone to engage as they really are rather than as she-trolls hiding behind a litany of throwaways. I've been downvoted to shit on this sub before and survived if somebody wants to tell me my opinion is stupid and horrible, that's fine, because this is how views get changed. Plus, I think anonimity incentivizes people to behave poorly towards each other. I see no reason to use a throwaway on what is already an anonymous forum for a discussion that I would have in real life anyway. NB: this is my real account with my real post history here and on other subs. OP deleted that post, and it was gearing up to be such a good discussion! So I'm gonna reinstate it. ![]()
